Life is full of unexpected surprises, and while we’d love for them all to make us smile, that’s not always possible, and there are many reasons why you might not want to show your smile. If you don’t want to smile because you’re missing one or more teeth, you’re not alone. In fact, 120 million people in the U.S. are missing at least one tooth, and more than 36 million Americans don’t have any teeth at all.
There are solutions whether the problem is caused by tooth decay, gum disease (the most common reason, with 50% of Americans over 30 having the most severe form of periodontitis), illness, or an accident. Dr. Motiwala would like to tell you about your choices, which have grown and gotten better over the years as technology has improved and people have kept learning.
An Ounce of Prevention
You’ve probably heard this old saying before, but just in case: “is worth a pound of cure.” We think this is true at Dr. Motiwala Dental Clinic & Implant Centre. We want to see smiles so we can find problems early and help you escape having to go through more complicated procedures. If tooth decay and/or an infection in the pulp area of your tooth are caught early, we may be able to save your tooth with a root canal, an inlay or onlay, or a crown.
If, on the other hand, the damage is done and a tooth needs to be pulled or has already left the body, you don’t have to give up hope. We can either bring people together or give them some strong and wise pearls. If you need to replace more than a few teeth, you can also get partial or full dentures. Today’s dentures are more comfortable and look more like real teeth than dentures from decades ago.
Let’s Get Back Together
If you have a space between two or more teeth, you might want to see a counselor… just joking! Dr. Motiwala can make a dental bridge that will fix your smile and make it look good again.
If the space where your tooth used to be is next to other teeth, those teeth can be used as anchors to hold a standard bridge in place. If the space is in the back of your mouth and you only have one tooth to use as an anchor, a Cantilever bridge can be made and attached to keep it in place. A Maryland is the third type of bridge that can replace a lost tooth. For support, Maryland bridges have metal wings that are bonded straight to your neighboring teeth. This means that you don’t have to prepare and put crowns on your neighboring teeth.
Finding the Right Fit
Dentures are another choice if you need to replace all or most of your teeth. They have grown and gotten better over time. Your dentist can help you decide which of traditional, immediate, and overdentures is best for you. If you go the traditional way, you have to wait for them to heal before they can be put in. This can take several months. Taking measures and making models of your mouth and jaw during a preliminary visit makes it possible to put on dentures right away after the last teeth have been pulled. Overdentures are a good choice if you still have healthy teeth because they can fit over the top of your tooth roots and be held in place by implants. This makes them feel and look more natural. During this time, you may feel some pain, but we will do everything we can to get your mouth healthy and working again.
The Long Haul
If you are missing one tooth, a few teeth, or all of your teeth, dental implants are the solution that both doctors and patients suggest the most. Their ability to keep your jawbone healthy by acting like a tooth root is unmatched, and neither is their flexibility. Dental implants are small metal posts that are put into your jawbone, connected to an abutment, and topped with a beautiful, long-lasting porcelain crown, bridge, or full set of dentures. Not only do they look and feel the most like your natural teeth, but they can also last a lifetime if you take good care of them.
The End of the Story
When it comes to replacing teeth that have been lost, the jury is still out. It’s important not just because the hole they leave can make you feel bad about yourself, but also because it can hurt your mouth health. When you lose a tooth, the teeth around it may move and change the way you bite. Without that tooth’s root, your jawbone starts to break down, giving you a sunken-in look. If you’ve been missing a tooth or more for a while, you know that it affects what you eat and how you talk. Dr. Motiwala is able to make your mouth healthy and beautiful again, and he would be happy to do so. Call us right away to set up a meeting!
